Canada Colour has officially been live for just over a month. The idea started in November. Designs were finished by December. Website by January. Launched in February.
In theory, that sounds clean and efficient. In reality? Well… it’s been a lot.
Coming from journalism, especially working at places like CBC and NHK, I was used to structure. There were systems, processes, and a lot of talented people around to make sure nothing fell through the cracks.
Now? It’s just me and Tanya. Building trust from zero. It’s intimidating. But also exhilarating.
When we launched, my wife brought home a bottle of sparkling wine to quietly celebrate. It wasn’t a grand opening — more like a soft start. We ran some ads, did outreach, and I’m grateful that a few friends placed those first orders to help get things moving. Then we began seeing orders from across Canada start to roll in.
It’s been fascinating to see where our customers are from and what resonates with them. Whether it’s wall art inspired by the Canadian flag or designs inspired by provincial pride, it about staying connected to the places that shaped us. A person living in New Brunswick ordering a BC Bauhaus print or an Ontario Icon Frame for someone living in Whitehorse.
Just like in journalism, you plan for one thing and end up covering something totally unexpected. When US President Donald Trump imposed tariffs, rising Canadian nationalism became part of the conversation. Suddenly, we aren’t just selling Canadian souvenirs, we are part of a much bigger cultural moment.
It's why we've ensured all of our products are designed, printed and shipping in Canada.
I’d love to hear from you if you’ve got feedback, ideas or just wanted to catch up.
