Today marks the 60th anniversary of the Canadian flag—a symbol that has come to represent the unity, pride, and resilience of our country. Since its adoption in 1965, the maple leaf has stood as a powerful representation of Canada’s diverse identity and shared values. As the Prime Minister recently noted, the flag continues to unify Canadians from all walks of life, a beacon of strength in times of both challenge and triumph.
One of the most powerful ways the flag has represented our identity is through hockey. The jersey, with the maple leaf front and centre, has always been one of the most visible expressions of our national pride. The design of Team Canada’s jerseys evolve, but the message behind them has never changed — unity, resilience, and an unwavering drive for excellence.
It feels fitting that, on Flag Day, Canada faces off against the USA in one of the biggest games in recent memory. Hockey has been at the heart of our identity for generations, and every game, every victory, and every goal represents not just the team, but the entire country.
Tonight, I’ll be watching this storied rivalry with my three-year-old daughter. Her first introduction to the passion and intensity of this game. As we cheer on Team Canada together, I’m reminded of what we’ve accomplished—and what we continue to achieve.
Go Canada.
